Frequently Asked Qestions
What genres do you publish?
We publish a wide range of genres — with a focus on:
We also support self-published authors in all genres.
What is hybrid publishing?
Hybrid publishing is a model where the author shares the cost of publishing with the publisher. This allows authors to retain more control over their work while benefiting from the expertise and resources of a professional publishing house.
What are the costs involved in hybrid publishing?
We charge a non-refundable deposit upfront, which is used to pay our contractors. The balance is due upon receipt of printed proof. The exact costs can vary depending on the specific needs of the project.
What imprints do you publish under?
We publish non-fiction books under our Northern Forest Publishing imprint and fiction books under our Otter & Osprey Press imprint.
Do you offer self-publishing options?
Yes, we offer self-publishing options for authors who prefer to handle the publishing process independently.
Can I just hire you for editing or publishing?
Absolutely. All of our services are available à la carte — you can hire us just for editing, cover design, formatting, or any combination. Many authors come to us with a book-in-progress and choose exactly the services they need. We’re happy to help.
Who retains the copyright of the book?
The copyright always stays with the author. However, the author transfers the publishing rights to us, allowing us to publish and distribute the book.
Will I have input into the cover and interior design?
Yes, our process is very collaborative. We will guide you through the process of making design decisions as we create a beautiful edition for you.
What services are included in the publishing package?
Our publishing package typically includes editing, cover design, formatting, and distribution. You can see the details on our pricing page. Additional services such as marketing and promotional support can be arranged as needed.
How long does the publishing process take?
The timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the project, but on average, the publishing process takes between 6 to 12 months from the initial deposit to the receipt of the printed proof.
Can I make changes to my manuscript after submitting it?
Yes, you can make changes to your manuscript during the editing process. However, significant changes after the final proof may incur additional costs.
How do I submit my manuscript for consideration?
We recommend that you arrange a call with Kevin Coleman, the publisher, before submitting your manuscript.
Use this link: https://calendly.com/kevin-author/30min to arrange the call. You can also submit your manuscript by emailing to
admin@northernforestpublishing.com.
What happens after my book is published?
Once your book is published, it will be available for purchase through various distribution channels, including online retailers and bookstores. We will also provide you with a marketing plan to help promote your book.
Why is the book destroyed when you produce a new Word file from a printed copy?
The service we use removes the book cover, then uses a paper shear to remove the spine. This leaves a stack of loose pages which are then fed through a specialized two-sided scanners and high-end optical character reader to produce a clean Word file (docx). Normally, the dissected book is then discarded. The Word file is then ready for editing as Your 2nd Edition.
I already published my book with a different publisher. Can you still publish my second edition?
Almost always yes. We need to see your original publishing agreement if you have it, and in some cases, we will have to secure a release
from the previous publisher. Talk to us as every case is a bit different.
Do you publish children’s books?
We publish middle grade books (Ages 8 to 12) which are text with some illustrations. Children’s picture books will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
